How to Update your BIOS


All latest Motherboards today 486/Pentium/Pentium pro etc ensure that upgrades  are easily obtained by incorporating the system BIOS in a flash memory component.With Flash BIOS, there is no need to replace an EPROM component.Once downloaded the upgrade utility the system BIOS.A hard drive or a network drive can also be used to run the newer upgrade utilities.

Steps to update BIOS
1.Create a Bootable Floppy (in DOS)
2.With a non formatted disk type the following command
format a:/s
3.If using a formatted disk,type
sys a:
This procedure makes sure a clean boot when you are flashing the new BIOS

4.Download the BIOS file
Download the correct BIOS  file by clicking on the file name of the BIOS file you wish to download
Save the BIOS file and the faulty utility file in the boot disk you have created.Unzip the BIOS file and the flash utility download the WINZIP for windows

5.You must have 2 files now
Flash BIOS uitlity  and  BIOS eg:621525

6.Upgrade the system BIOS
During the boot up write down the old BIOS version because you need to use it for the BIOS backup file name.Place the bootable dvd containing the BIOS file and the flash utility in drive and reboot the system in MS-DOS.From the flash memory write menu select "Y" to save BIOS .for suppose if you want to save your current BIOS then type the name of your current BIOS and its extension after FILE name to save.Alternate select "N" if you don't want to save your current BIOS.Beware through that you won't able to recover from a possible failure.

7.Select "Y" Are you sure to program?? Wait until it displays "Message :Power off or Reset the System".Once the BIOS has been successfully loaded remove the disc and reboot the system.If you write to BIOS but can't complete the procedure do not shutdown,because the computer will not be able to boo and you will not be able to give any other chance to flash.

Make sure that the new BIOS version has been loaded properly by taking note of BIOS identifier as the system is rebooting

8.For AMI BIOS
Make sure never to turn off or reset computer during the flash process.This will corrupt the BIOS data.And you should always have a copy of current BIOS on the system or dvd,so that you can reflash it
